Discover: a reading feed built only from open sources
A news feed next to the chat, assembled entirely from openly licensed material, with the credit line attached to every story.
Discover is a quiet column of stories beside the chat: pick the subjects you care about, read the day, and follow anything back to where it came from.
The constraint we set ourselves was that every word and every photograph must be free to reuse. That rules out most of what a news aggregator normally scrapes, and it rules it out on purpose - a product that lectures people about privacy should not be quietly republishing text it has no right to.
Where the material comes from
Stories are imported server-side from open-licence encyclopaedic and news sources. The full text is stored verbatim, along with the licence, the licence URL, the attribution line and the image credit. Nothing is paraphrased into ambiguity: if a story is CC BY-SA, it says so at the bottom, with a link.
Images go through our own proxy rather than being hot-linked. The proxy accepts one media host and nothing else, which means a story cannot smuggle in a tracking pixel from a third party. Your reading is not announced to anyone.
What it does not do
There is no account requirement, no personalised advertising profile, and no reading history tied to a person. Interests hang off an opaque cookie id, which is as anonymous as the rest of this site.
What is next
More sources within the same licence rule, and a per-topic feed you can subscribe to over RSS. If you spot a story that does not carry its credit correctly, that is a bug - tell us and it gets fixed the same day.
