How to use Tools

The ask bar has four objects and nothing else: +, Tools, a microphone, and send. Everything else lives inside one of those.

+ attaches a file

A picture, a document, a spreadsheet. The file is encrypted in the browser before it is stored. Questions about something you attached fail less often than questions asked in the abstract, because the model is looking at the thing itself.

Tools holds the lanes

Search
The ordinary chat. It can still look the web up when the question needs a page.
Computer
A longer job that needs a workspace. Use it when the question is a task, not a sentence.
Research
More queries, full pages, one research session. Turn it on when the answer needs sources you will open.
Ghost
Nothing from this thread is saved. Use it for something you do not want in the list.

The microphone is dictation, not voice mode

It types what you say into the same field. In Chrome the audio goes to the browser's recognition service. That is not Advanced Voice, and it is not private in the way an encrypted file is. If the mic is grey, this browser cannot do it.
